Echo and Narcissus
Nicolas Poussin Β· 1629
Why it's great
The handsome Narcissus lies by a pool, in love with his own reflection, while the nymph Echo fades away behind him. Nicolas Poussin painted it in about 1629, and in the myth Narcissus is turned into a flower.

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter born in Les Andelys in 1594. He moved to Rome as a young man and spent most of his life there, painting calm, well-planned scenes from ancient history and mythology that set the standard for classical painting. He died in Rome in 1665.
