Landscape with Polyphemus
Nicolas Poussin Β· 1649
Why it's great
A giant, Polyphemus, plays a flute high on a mountain, behind a green, mythical landscape with nymphs and a shepherd. Nicolas Poussin painted it in 1649, and the giant is almost hidden in the rocks.

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter born in Les Andelys in 1594. He moved to Rome as a young man and spent most of his life there, painting calm, well-planned scenes from ancient history and mythology that set the standard for classical painting. He died in Rome in 1665.
