Apollo Flaying Marsyas

Jusepe de Ribera Β· 1637

Why it's great

The god Apollo punishes a satyr, Marsyas, who dared to challenge him to a music contest, while others gather round. Jusepe de Ribera painted it in 1637, and the Greek myth is dark and gruesome.
