Parnassus
Nicolas Poussin Β· 1630
Why it's great
The god Apollo sits at the center of Mount Parnassus, surrounded by the Muses and poets, who write and sing. Nicolas Poussin painted it in about 1630, and the graceful figures stand in a calm, balanced group.

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter born in Les Andelys in 1594. He moved to Rome as a young man and spent most of his life there, painting calm, well-planned scenes from ancient history and mythology that set the standard for classical painting. He died in Rome in 1665.
