Et in Arcadia ego
Nicolas Poussin Β· 1638
Why it's great
Shepherds in a rocky landscape find a tomb with the words Et in Arcadia ego, a reminder that death is present even in happy places. Nicolas Poussin painted this famous picture in about 1638, and people still argue about what it means.

Nicolas Poussin was a French painter born in Les Andelys in 1594. He moved to Rome as a young man and spent most of his life there, painting calm, well-planned scenes from ancient history and mythology that set the standard for classical painting. He died in Rome in 1665.
