Portrait of Innocent X

Diego Velázquez · 1700

Why it's great

The pope sits in a red cap and robe, with a sharp, suspicious face and eyes that follow you. Diego Velázquez painted it in about 1650, and the pope said it was 'too true'. The 20th-century artist Francis Bacon painted many screaming versions of it.
