Portrait of the Kangxi Emperor in Informal Dress Holding a Brush
Kangxi Emperor · 1700
Why it's great
The Kangxi Emperor sits in a relaxed pose, holding a brush, in a plain robe. The emperor ruled China for 61 years, longer than anyone else, and he painted and wrote poetry as well. This portrait shows him as a scholar, not only a ruler. It's a thoughtful picture of an emperor.
