A Meat Stall with the Holy Family Giving Alms
Pieter Aertsen Β· 1551
Why it's great
A big butcher's stall full of sausages, a pig's head and cuts of meat takes up the front, while in the back Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus give a coin to a beggar. Pieter Aertsen painted it in 1551, and the food is the star.
