Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Dresden)
The Zwinger palace in Dresden houses a gallery of Old Masters that is home to Raphael's Sistine Madonna, famous for the two little angels at the bottom.
History of the museum
The painting collection goes back to the 1500s and the rulers of Saxony, who were great collectors. In the 1740s Augustus III bought masterpieces including the Sistine Madonna. The Zwinger gallery was built in the 1850s by Gottfried Semper, and the paintings were hidden during the bombing of Dresden in 1945, then taken by the Soviet army and returned to Dresden in 1955.
