Gemäldegalerie, Berlin
Berlin's collection of European paintings from the 1200s to the 1700s has Vermeer, Rembrandt, Bruegel, Dürer and Botticelli, in a sleek modern gallery at the Kulturforum.
History of the museum
The collection began with the Prussian royal art collection, which was opened to the public in the Altes Museum in 1830. After the Second World War it was divided between East and West Berlin, and was reunited in 1998 in a new building. Many of its masterpieces had been hidden in mines and bunkers during the war.
