Adoration in the Forest
Filippo Lippi · 1459
Why it's great
The baby Jesus lies on the ground in a dark forest, and Mary, a little John the Baptist and God the Father surround him. Filippo Lippi painted this about 1459, and the dark forest sets off the glow of the baby.

Filippo Lippi was a Florentine painter born in 1406, who was a Carmelite friar for much of his life. He painted tender Madonnas with real, lovely faces, and his son Filippino also became a painter. He died in Spoleto in 1469.
