Filippo Lippi Β· 1460
Why it's great
Mary holds the baby Jesus in front of a window with a view of a landscape, and angels help hold him up. Filippo Lippi painted this about 1460, and it is among his most loved pictures.

Filippo Lippi was a Florentine painter born in 1406, who was a Carmelite friar for much of his life. He painted tender Madonnas with real, lovely faces, and his son Filippino also became a painter. He died in Spoleto in 1469.
