Agony in the Garden
Giovanni Bellini Β· 1459
Why it's great
Christ kneels on a rocky hill as the sun rises, while his friends sleep and Judas leads soldiers toward him. Giovanni Bellini painted this in about 1459, and the sky is one of the most beautiful in early Italian painting.

Giovanni Bellini was a Venetian painter, born in Venice around 1430 into a family of painters. He was the teacher of Giorgione and Titian and led Venetian painting into the High Renaissance with his glowing colors and quiet, thoughtful Madonnas. He worked in Venice all his life and died there in 1516.
