Madonna and sleeping child
Andrea Mantegna Β· 1457
Why it's great
Mary holds her baby close while he sleeps, and her cheek rests near his. Andrea Mantegna painted this in about 1457, and the sleeping baby is a sign of how the story would end.

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian painter born in 1431 and was the court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His sharply drawn, statue-like figures and bold use of perspective were studied by many painters, including his brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini. He died in 1506.
