Christ as the Suffering Redeemer
Andrea Mantegna Β· 1488
Why it's great
Christ sits on the edge of his tomb with angels around him, showing his wounds and looking at us. Andrea Mantegna painted this in 1488, and it is a quiet, sorrowful image for people to meditate on.

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian painter born in 1431 and was the court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His sharply drawn, statue-like figures and bold use of perspective were studied by many painters, including his brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini. He died in 1506.
