Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin
Rogier van der Weyden Β· 1490
Why it's great
Saint Luke, who was said to be a painter, kneels to draw Mary as she nurses the baby Jesus, using a metalpoint pen. Rogier van der Weyden painted it in about 1440, and some people think the face of Luke is a self-portrait.
