Christ with singing and music-making Angels
Hans Memling Β· 1489
Why it's great
Angels sing and play the harp, the lute, the organ and the trumpet, and some are shown reading music. Hans Memling painted these panels in 1489, and the details of the instruments are exactly right.

Hans Memling was born in Germany in about 1435 and became the most successful painter in Bruges, in what is now Belgium. His calm, sweet and beautifully detailed religious pictures and portraits were bought by rich merchants and bankers from all over Europe. He died in Bruges in 1494.
