Moreel Triptych
Hans Memling Β· 1484
Why it's great
The Moreel family kneels in the side panels, with a saint standing behind each of them, and Saint Christopher carries the child in the middle. Hans Memling painted this in 1484, and the faces of the family look like real people.

Hans Memling was born in Germany in about 1435 and became the most successful painter in Bruges, in what is now Belgium. His calm, sweet and beautifully detailed religious pictures and portraits were bought by rich merchants and bankers from all over Europe. He died in Bruges in 1494.
