The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius
Carlo Crivelli Β· 1486
Why it's great
The angel Gabriel arrives in a busy Italian town, and a small beam of light shoots into Mary's room. Carlo Crivelli painted it in 1486, and the painting is crammed with rugs, peacocks and fruit.

Carlo Crivelli was an Italian painter born in Venice in about 1430, who spent most of his life working in towns along the Adriatic coast. His altarpieces glitter with gold and jewels, and he liked to add painted fruit and flies. He died in about 1495.
