Mary Magdalen
Carlo Crivelli Β· 1480
Why it's great
Mary Magdalene looks out of the picture with a jar of ointment and long, rippling hair. Carlo Crivelli painted it in about 1480, and the jewelry and clothes are painted to look like real silk and gems.

Carlo Crivelli was an Italian painter born in Venice in about 1430, who spent most of his life working in towns along the Adriatic coast. His altarpieces glitter with gold and jewels, and he liked to add painted fruit and flies. He died in about 1495.
