Virgin and Child
Carlo Crivelli Β· 1472
Why it's great
Mary holds the baby Jesus in front of a golden cloth, and a ripe apple and garland of fruit hang above them. Carlo Crivelli painted it in 1472, in his jeweled style, with every curl and gem carefully drawn.

Carlo Crivelli was an Italian painter born in Venice in about 1430, who spent most of his life working in towns along the Adriatic coast. His altarpieces glitter with gold and jewels, and he liked to add painted fruit and flies. He died in about 1495.
