Polyptych of Madonna and child with saints
Carlo Crivelli Β· 1468
Why it's great
Mary and the baby Jesus sit in the center of a golden altarpiece, with saints on either side in individual panels. Carlo Crivelli painted it in 1468, and his gold and jewelry are so detailed they look like they could be touched.

Carlo Crivelli was an Italian painter born in Venice in about 1430, who spent most of his life working in towns along the Adriatic coast. His altarpieces glitter with gold and jewels, and he liked to add painted fruit and flies. He died in about 1495.
