Madonna of the Carnation
Leonardo da Vinci · 1475
Why it's great
Mary holds out a red carnation to the baby Jesus, who reaches for it with his chubby hand. Leonardo da Vinci painted it in about 1475 when he was in his twenties, with a pretty landscape through the two windows behind.
