Saint Jerome in the Wilderness

Leonardo da Vinci · 1480

Why it's great

A thin, haggard Saint Jerome kneels in a rocky place and beats his chest with a stone, while a lion lies at his feet. Leonardo da Vinci painted it in about 1480, but he never finished it, so you can still see the outline underneath.
