Crucifixion with a Donor
Hieronymus Bosch Β· 1485
Why it's great
Christ hangs on the cross against a dark sky, with a small man kneeling at the foot. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in about 1485, and the donor kneeling at the cross is shown much smaller than Mary and the saints.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
