Lamentation of Christ
Andrea Mantegna Β· 1483
Why it's great
Christ lies on a slab, seen from his feet, with weeping mourners at his head. Andrea Mantegna painted this in about 1483, and the foreshortening, which is the way he's drawn from the feet, is so dramatic that people still talk about it.

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian painter born in 1431 and was the court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His sharply drawn, statue-like figures and bold use of perspective were studied by many painters, including his brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini. He died in 1506.
