Judith and Holofernes

Francisco Goya Β· 1819

Why it's great

Judith, in a long gown, holds a sack with a severed head, and a servant stands nearby. Andrea Mantegna or a follower made this picture in gray tones in about 1495, and it shows the Bible hero who saved her city.

About the artist

Francisco Goya

1746–1828 Β· born in Fuendetodos Β· died in Bordeaux

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
