The Entombment of Atala

Anne-Louis Girodet Β· 1808

Why it's great

A young woman is laid in a grave in a natural setting by a priest and a Native American man who loves her. Girodet painted a scene from a novel by Chateaubriand. The silvery light is dreamlike. It was a sensation in Paris in 1808.
