Adoration of the Name of God
Francisco Goya Β· 1772
Why it's great
Angels swirl around a bright triangle with the name of God in a golden burst of clouds. Goya painted it on the ceiling of a church in Zaragoza, when he was 26. It shows his early talent. It's one of the earliest works of the great painter.

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
