The Immaculate Conception
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo ยท 1767
Why it's great
Mary floats in a pale blue gown, standing on a crescent moon and surrounded by angels, in a cloud of golden light. Tiepolo painted it for a church in Madrid. The airy colors make the whole scene look like it's floating. It's one of the most graceful paintings of the Baroque era.

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was born in Venice and became the greatest Italian painter of the 1700s. He painted huge, airy ceilings full of angels, gods and clouds in churches and palaces in Italy, Germany and Spain. His light, bright colors defined the last great age of Venetian painting. He died in Madrid in 1770.
