A Philosopher by Lamplight

Joseph Wright of Derby Β· 1769

Why it's great

An old philosopher in a red hat sits reading by the light of a single lamp, which makes his face glow in the dark. Wright of Derby was a master of dramatic candlelight. The picture makes you think about the quiet joy of studying. It's a model of strong light and shadow.
