The Captive King

Joseph Wright of Derby Β· 1772

Why it's great

A man draws back in surprise as a captive starling, which can only say 'I can't get out,' flutters in a cage. The painting was inspired by a story by Laurence Sterne. Wright of Derby used lamplight to bring the moment to life. It makes you think about freedom and kindness.
