The Appearance of Christ Before the People

Alexander Ivanov Β· 1847

Why it's great

A crowd in the Roman Empire gathers by a river to hear John the Baptist, as Jesus approaches in the distance. Alexander Ivanov spent about 20 years painting it in Rome. He studied people from all backgrounds. It's one of Russia's most important religious paintings.
