The end of the world

John Martin Β· 1851

Why it's great

The sky turns blood-red as mountains crumble and the world tumbles into darkness. John Martin painted huge, apocalyptic scenes. The painting is part of a set on the Last Judgment. It's an awe-inspiring and frightening picture.
