Christ in the House of His Parents

John Everett Millais Β· 1849

Why it's great

A young Jesus in a carpenter's workshop has hurt his hand on a nail, and his family gathers around him. Millais painted every shaving, tool and detail with scientific care, and the scene hints at future events. When it was shown in 1850, some critics, including Charles Dickens, hated it. Now it's treasured as a daring early Pre-Raphaelite painting.
