Ecce Ancilla Domini
Dante Gabriel Rossetti Β· 1850
Why it's great
A young woman, Mary, sits on a bed in a plain white room as the angel Gabriel appears. Rossetti used only white and blue, a bold choice. The title means 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord.' It was a fresh, modern view of a very old story.
