The Vale of Rest

John Everett Millais Β· 1858

Why it's great

Two nuns in a convent graveyard at twilight, one digging a grave, the other sitting nearby. Millais painted it near London, with a sunset sky. The still, silent mood is unforgettable. It's a haunting view of quiet devotion.
