The Duel After the Masquerade
Jean-Léon Gérôme · 1857
Why it's great
At dawn in the snow, a man in a white Pierrot costume is held by his friend after losing a duel. The story's details are uncertain, but the picture was a hit with the public. The harsh cold and the colorful costumes make it unforgettable. It's a fine example of dramatic storytelling.
