Bonaparte Before the Sphinx
Jean-Léon Gérôme · 1867
Why it's great
Napoleon, still a young general, sits on his horse before the Great Sphinx in Egypt. Gérôme painted the face of the Sphinx as if the two are staring at each other. The scene has a mysterious, silent feel. It's a famous image of the clash of old and new.
