Cleopatra and Caesar

Jean-Léon Gérôme · 1866

Why it's great

A rolled-up carpet is unrolled at Julius Caesar's feet, and out peeks Cleopatra. The story says she was smuggled into his palace this way. Gérôme painted the moment of surprise in rich detail. It's a dramatic episode from ancient history.

🏛️ Part of history

Julius Caesar & the Fall of the Roman Republic (100–27 BC) — A young Cleopatra is delivered to Caesar rolled in a carpet. This meeting started a famous alliance.

Cleopatra, Antony & the Rise of the Empire (44 BC – 14 AD) — Before Antony there was Caesar: Gérôme shows the young queen arriving in Caesar's rooms.
