The Last Supper
Nikolai Ge Β· 1863
Why it's great
Jesus sits in shadow, in the dim light of a lamp, after dinner, as Judas leaves the room with a huge shadow. Nikolai Ge painted the emotional moment before the betrayal. The dramatic lighting was new for religious art. It caused a sensation in Russia in 1863.
