St. John on Patmos
Hieronymus Bosch · 1489
Why it's great
Saint John sits on a rocky island, writing his book of visions, while an angel shows him a scene of Mary in the sky. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in 1489, and on the back is a picture of the life of Christ.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
