The Wayfarer
Hieronymus Bosch Β· 1500
Why it's great
A tired man with a bundle on his back walks away from a house, while a dog snaps at his leg. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in about 1500, and nobody is sure whether it is a peddler or a man leaving the dangers of the world.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
