Christ Crowned with Thorns
Hieronymus Bosch Β· 1495
Why it's great
Christ sits in the center of four men who press a crown of thorns on his head, and his eyes stare right at us. Hieronymus Bosch painted it in about 1495, and the men's faces are uglier than anything you would see in real life.

Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter, born in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450. He lived there all his life and painted strange, crowded visions of heaven, hell and human foolishness filled with monsters and tiny details. He died in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1516.
