Manchester Madonna
Michelangelo Β· 1494
Why it's great
Mary holds a book while the baby Jesus and the young John the Baptist stand beside her, and angels hover behind. This unfinished painting is attributed to Michelangelo, from about 1494, and it shows how he worked, because parts are still just outlines.

Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy, in 1475 and worked in Florence and Rome. He was a sculptor, painter and architect who made the statue of David and painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He died in Rome in 1564, almost 89 years old.
