St. Jerome in the Wilderness
Albrecht Dürer · 1496
Why it's great
Saint Jerome kneels beside a rock, holding a stone to beat his chest, with a lion nearby. Albrecht Dürer painted it in about 1496, and the sky and rocks show how much he was studying nature.

Albrecht Dürer was a German artist born in Nuremberg in 1471. He was a painter, but he is most famous for his woodcuts and engravings, which made him known across Europe, and for traveling to Italy to learn from Renaissance artists. He lived mostly in Nuremberg and died there in 1528.
