Death of the Virgin
Andrea Mantegna Β· 1462
Why it's great
The apostles gather around Mary as she lies on her deathbed, with a lake and a bridge visible through the windows. Andrea Mantegna painted it in about 1462, and the view out the window shows his home town of Mantua.

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian painter born in 1431 and was the court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His sharply drawn, statue-like figures and bold use of perspective were studied by many painters, including his brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini. He died in 1506.
