San Zeno Altarpiece
Andrea Mantegna Β· 1457
Why it's great
Mary and the baby Jesus sit on a throne under a bower of fruit and flowers, surrounded by angels and saints. Andrea Mantegna painted this altarpiece in 1457 for a church in Verona, and the painted columns blend with the real ones.

Andrea Mantegna was an Italian painter born in 1431 and was the court painter to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. His sharply drawn, statue-like figures and bold use of perspective were studied by many painters, including his brother-in-law Giovanni Bellini. He died in 1506.
