Polyptych of the Misericordia
Piero della Francesca Β· 1460
Why it's great
Mary spreads her wide cloak to shelter a group of people kneeling under it, in a many-paneled altarpiece. Piero della Francesca painted it in about 1460, and the people under her cloak are the townspeople who paid for it.
