Diptych of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza
Piero della Francesca Β· 1470
Why it's great
A duke and his wife face each other in profile, painted as two panels that fold like a book, with a wide landscape behind them. Piero della Francesca painted it in about 1470. Federico's nose looks odd because he lost his right eye and part of his nose in a tournament, so he always showed his left side.

Piero della Francesca was an Italian painter and mathematician, born in about 1415 in Sansepolcro. His calm, still pictures use geometry and clear light, with smooth, solid figures. He died in 1492.
